SPORTS INITIATIVES TO BENEFIT YOUTH

Youths form the core of every nation as vital human capital is essential to the continuous development of its society and economy.

Recognising youth development as an important key in helping the country achieve a developed nation status by 2020 as well as being a high-income economy, several key targets were set for the Youth and Sports Ministry under the Ministerial Key Results Area (MKRA) initiative of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

Within the purview of the Youth and Sports Ministry are programmes and initiatives aimed at ultimately engaging our youth in healthy, educational and nation-building exercises, which will develop them into intelligent, mature and responsible adults in the future.

Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, strongly believes that youth are the catalyst of Malaysia's transformation towards a high-income developed nation by 2020.

KD: Youths need to know they have a say in shaping their society, that their contributions are needed and that they can make a difference. But while youth usually have all the energy and passion, many do not know where to start. So, the govt should guide them on how they can turn their passion into action.

However, the Gua Musang Umno chief said Mustapa's efforts would not have been successful without cooperation from the leadership and the grassroots.
ON ALERT AFTER TREMORS

TSUNAMI WORRY: Shoppers, apartment dwellers rush out, beaches deserted

Hundreds of people ran out of shopping complexes and apartments, while those enjoying the breezy evening at the Esplanade and Batu Feringghi were told to move away from the sea following tremors and tsunami alerts, after a 8.6 magnitude earthquake in Aceh yesterday.

There were also reports that the tremor caused waters to spill out from a swimming pool at the Penang Turf Club in Batu Gantung.

Hotels located along Batu Ferringhi were also reported to have issued alerts to their guests of possible tsunami.

Hard Rock Hotel's marketing communications manager Elisa Saw said its security department head and security personnel were on standby to evacuate guests from the beach area as a precaution after receiving tsunami alerts.

"We are monitoring the situation for safety reasons and the welfare of our guests," Saw said.

Hydro Hotel general manager M. Kumar said the hotel had alerted staff and guests on the earthquake and put up notices warning guests not to go to the beach area.

Batu Feringghi was deserted with most people moving to higher grounds in fear of a tsunami.

Checks showed police, civil defence and volunteer corps personnel busy evacuating people from the beach, although some chose to ignore the warnings and continue strolling the beach.

Workers from a textile factory in Solok Pinang milling about after the factory ordered its 1,500 workers to vacate the building yesterday.

Meanwhile, a textile factory in Solok Pinang here was reported to have ordered its 1,500 workers out of the plant.

In Kepala Batas, the authorities had issued a warning to residents along the Kuala Muda coastline here to avoid the beaches. Police and the Fire Rescue Department personnel were on standby at the location.

Kota Kuala Muda, Kedah, the settlement worst hit by the tsunami in 2004, was almost deserted yesterday as soon as tremors were felt in five villagers.

Most of the residents from five villages vacated their homes and assembled at Dewan Tunku Shafinaz Intan multi-purpose hall as they had been trained to do so.

The residents -- from Kampung Tepi Sungai, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Padang Salim, Kampung Keda Tepi Sungai and Kampung Kepala Jalan -- moved out on their accord after their villages were hit by tremors, which started at 4.50pm and lasted for 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, more than 200 fishermen and their families have been relocated to Kuah, Belanga Pecah and Temuju in light of the earthquake which hit Aceh.

Fishermen Committee leader Asri Shaaban, 52, said colleagues, who were out at sea, were notified of the event and told to return.
"Everyone came back safely and were accounted for. More than 170 fishing boats have been relocated to safe areas near the Langkawi International Airport."

Risk areas have been identified in Kuala Chenang, Chenang beach, Keriang and Pulau Melaka. Those living there had been evacuated.

Asri said they had been practising these tactics since the tsunami incident in 2004.
An operations centre had also been opened. He said the second quake which occurred a 7pm in Indonesia was felt more acutely than the first one at 4pm. However, he expressed confidence that everything would be all right as they had taken the proper precautionary measures.

Ferry services to and from Langkawi were halted after the first level tsunami warning was issued.

VALE ISSUE: 'WE DIDN'T APOLOGISE'
3 DAP assemblymen ask Perak MB to clarify, but MB stands by his claim

Former Perak state executive councillors  Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, Nga Kor Ming and Thomas Su  refuted the New Straits Times report that they had apologised to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir over the Vale issue.

The three also wanted NST to apologise within 48 hours or they would contemplate legal action.

Along with former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, they asked Zambry to clarify (the matter).

They also claimed they did not apologise to Zambry. Nizar also wanted the NST to apologise to Pakatan Rakyat and DAP leaders.

Su said this was an irresponsible act to cause a friction among the PR leaders to disunite them.

Zambry, when asked about the denial, said: "You should throw the question (back) at them. They know they met me at the canteen. Ngeh saw me and now he has forgotten that we had a casual talk on the matter with friends.

"To me, the apology is not important. The issue is the status of the project itself. I do not want to prolong the issue. What is important is that the issue was debated and I have revealed the status of the project to the public... they said they did not agree, but I have proved that they did."
GUAN ENG CRITICISED OVER 'THREAT'

GEORGE TOWN: A remark by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng threatening to stop allocations for schools which subscribe to Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian has drawn criticism with the DAP secretary-general warned to stop fanning racist sentiments in institutions of learning.

State Barisan Nasional (BN) working committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said Lim's statement showed how arrogant the latter had become of late.

Dr Teng said even if Lim might have issued the warning in jest, it was a serious remark coming from the chief executive of the state.

"He should know better than to joke about such things. It was an unwarranted statement but it clearly shows how arrogant he has become," he said.

DPM: ANWAR'S IDEA NOT FEASIBLE

IT is irresponsible for opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to suggest using Petronas' revenues to pay off the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the opposition had run out of ideas and would say anything because it was not the government.

He said, "It is easy to say that there is no need to repay the loans. Of course, some people who took the loans will be happy but that will cause problems to the government."
