POLITICKING: Government to keep it as long as necessary because it benefits
students
GEORGETOWN: THE National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan
scheme will not be abolished, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin
said yesterday.
He said the scheme would be maintained for as long as it was necessary,
adding that it had benefited those who needed funds to study in universities.
“The loan facility is to help needy students further their studies. It
also helps those who fail to secure scholarships.
“Abolishing it is tantamount to denying people the right to pursue
higher education,” he said at a gathering of some 6,000 civil servants and
youth at Universiti Sains Malaysia here.
The fund has disbursed RM43 billion.
Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the government would not
give in to pressure from certain groups to abolish the scheme just to get
electoral support.
He said opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call to use
Petronas’ oil revenue to pay for the loans was not feasible.
